1 Hour Mapping Challenge
Greetings friends!
We're overjoyed to introduce the first in what we hope will be an ongoing series of Level Design Challenges. The overriding goal of these Challenges is simple...challenge yourself to move out of your comfort zone, and grow in the process.
The Goal:
Your initial challenge is to build a level in 1 hour. Though the level doesn't NEED to be playable (we have no intention of verifying whether or not it is), the focus SHOULD on core gameplay concepts, without much concern for 'polish'. We suggest selecting a specific gameplay scenario, and building to that scenario.
Guidelines:
There are only 3 guidelines for this Challenge:
- The level must be completed within 1 hour
- The level must be posted on the 1 Hour Mapping Challenge Submission Thread
- The post must include at least 1 picture of the level.
If you're not already registered on the site, the process is very simple, and can be done here: login.proboards.com/register/6999139.
The submission thread will remain open through May 31st. There is no limit to the number of levels you can submit. Submit 1 and go into as much detail about it as possible, or submit many with the bare minimum of detail. Take whichever route you feel will be most beneficial to your own development.
Here are some of the supporting details that could be included in the map post as a tool to convey your thought processes:
- The Settings the map is designed for (generic CoD fps, Halo-style squad/arena hybrid shooter, doom/quake arena shooter, advanced mobility, fortnite, RTS. Number of players, etc.)
- Multiple Pictures, and/or video footage of the map
- An overview of the layout
- A Flow Diagram of your map
- An explanation of your source of inspiration for the map
- Anything else that helps convey your thought process

The Payoff:
Part of our purpose as a site is to help each other learn and grow, and our hope is that this challenge will stimulate some learning and growing. Because the focus is on facilitating a learning process, there will be no judgement of any of the submissions - this challenge will not have any 'winners'. Participation is meant to be its own reward. Having said that, we do intend to provide a secondary reward for participating in this challenge, by way of additional exposure for your work. Levels posted in the 1 Hour Mapping Challenge thread will be featured weekly on NLD's Twitter and Home Page. In addition, at the conclusion of the event, our Home Page will be transformed into a collage of all of your levels. We will display the levels, along with the name of the designer, for all to see.
Feedback:
Since this is new territory for us, we're sure we have plenty of opportunity for improvement. We're hoping to learn throughout from this Challenge as well.
We would love your feedback about this Challenge. What works? What doesn't work? What kind of Challenges might interest you in the future? Feel free to leave any Challenge feedback at all, and we'll use it to do things better next time around.
