Just read an interesting article titled "The creator of ‘Fortnite’ is leading a battle that could throw the entire video game industry into disarray, and it's likely to be terrible for Google and Apple". Interesting read, and makes a lot of sense. Though I don't see how it's throwing the industry into disarray, when it's the industry itself that's changing their approach. Will definitely be interesting to see what happens over the next couple of years. Here's an overview of the article: - "Fortnite" creator Epic Games spent 2018 challenging the way that Google, Apple, and Steam — the market-leading digital game store — do business.
- It's a sign of things to come, as the Epic Games Store and fellow upstart Discord both challenge Steam's dominance in a battle that could have ramifications for the entire app-store economy.
- Meanwhile, Microsoft, Google, and Electronic Arts are working on game streaming, something that could undermine the very notion of a dedicated video-game console.
- And Microsoft is pushing Xbox Game Pass, a $10 a month service that has the potential to change the economics of the video-game business — threading a needle between free-to-play and traditional game purchases.
- Ultimately, all of this adds up to one key takeaway: In the video-game industry, no incumbent is safe, and everything seems increasingly up for grabs.

I say good on ya to Epic Games, which to my knowledge has always been fairly good to gamers. Most of the rest of that article is is common to the point of predictable. I think the time frame for these changes will be alot slower than everyone thinks. Quite honestly if you want people to adopt quicker you offer them choice and fair incentives. People don't respond well to fabricated choice with incentivisations that are actually created by de-incentivising one of their choices.
For example, people have gladly and naturally moved to digital purchases after getting their disk drive added back to the Xbox one. That is because there are inherent benefits to it, like having your library on the go. They really need to further incentivise it and add proper digital game sharing. Digital reselling would be good too. I would even be for adding a $1 charge for resells that goes direct to the game developer. It's not much but it can add up and it's more than they get now with hard copies.
Off topic: Speeking of incentivisation, I was thinking about this before, one of my pet peeves about buying net enabled hardware in this age is that most of it basically comes as is even though we can update it. Sometimes you get a few firmware updates to build trust but most of the worthwhile features get passed on to the new hardware even though the upgrades are software/firmware changes or things that are moved on to chips for premium performance but are capable of being run in software mode.
Nobody wants to buy a new phone, Home Theater receiver, TV, Fit Bit or whatever every 2 years just because companies what to create value in their new product. Instead give us the ability to buy an updated service package for $25 or whatever to get the latest supported features until the hardware and our financial situation can justify the physical upgrade. Thus saving the planet from dealing with our unnecessary semi annual hardware upgrades and debt collectors from making one more phone call.
